President Joe Biden will ask for an extension of the Title 42 immigration policy, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin believes, as he noted on Sunday during an appearance on CBS’s “Face The Nation,” expressing his personal hopes that will happen as the US officials warn of imminent chaos in border states if the policy ends this week.
Sen. Manchin stressed that Biden needs to use every bit of power he has as an executive to find a way or ask for an extension of the Trump-era border management policy, reiterating the demands incorporated in the bipartisan letter to the US President he joined this week.
Referring to the migrant situation as a crisis, Sen. Manchin also said that Congress can manage under a crisis in a bipartisan way and could pass legislation that keeps Title 42 in place.
The Biden administration, however, was harshly criticized on Sunday by former New Jersey Governor, Republican Chris Christie, for failing to have another plan in place despite promises they made.
Christie also warned during a discussion on ABC’s “This Week” that there’s going to be mayhem on the border if they’re looking at 14,000 to 18,000 people a day crossing it.
The immigration-restricting policy that was used to expel more than 1 million migrants at the US’s southern border, implemented early in the COVID-19 pandemic, was blocked last month by a federal judge who described Title 42 as outdated.
That decision must be repealed by Wednesday – spurring fears of a worsening crisis on the southern border- with California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, among other officials, alarming that the lifting of the policy will be disastrous for their states.
Just days before Title 42 is set to end, the Texas border city of El Paso, which is currently dealing with a surge of migrants into shelters in the area, has been put under a state of emergency declaration by Mayor Oscar Leeser, highlighting the coming difficulties in coping with an influx of asylum seekers.
