On Thursday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the House of Representatives received congratulations from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for ending her historic term as the head of the House Democrats and her significant and ground-breaking career, The Hill reports.

The 116th Congress, which ran from 2019 to 2020, was led by McConnell and Pelosi. During this time, there was a partial government shutdown over a disagreement between then-President Trump and Democratic leaders on the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In March 2020, they collaborated to enact the $2 trillion CARES Act, which offered unemployment compensation, assistance to small companies, tax relief, and state and municipal help during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Hours after Pelosi’s address on the House floor announcing her desire to resign as head of the House Democratic caucus, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) chose not to attend, McConnell made his remark.

“There is no question that the impact of Speaker Pelosi’s consequential and path-breaking career will long endure,” he said.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries is anticipated to take over as the new House minority leader once Speaker Pelosi steps down from her leadership position, although she will continue to serve in Congress for the time being as a mentor.

A new leadership group for the House Democrats will be decided on November 30.
