President Joe Biden held a video call on Wednesday with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during which the two leaders discussed, among other things, global challenges, including energy security.
As the press release issued by the White House says, the leaders spoke about the strategic relationship between the US and UAE and addressed the $100bn partnership on clean energy signed between the two countries on Tuesday.
They celebrated the signing of the US-UAE Partnership for Accelerating Clean Energy (Pace), the landmark clean energy cooperation framework that will help spur $100 billion in financing and other support to generate 100 new gigawatts of clean energy as part of their efforts to accelerate the global clean energy transition.
Both Biden and Sheikh Mohamed recognized that Pace will be a significant catalyst to reach their net zero 2050 goals by accelerating investment in clean energy projects, technologies, and resources.
They noted during the call the importance of a well-managed and rapid energy transition and its potential to drive more sustainable growth and create expanded economic opportunities.
Sheikh Mohamed confirmed later in a post on Twitter that he and President Biden reaffirmed the depth of UAE-US relations and addressed topics like energy security and the commitment to enhancing climate action.
Looking ahead to Cop27 in Egypt later this month and to Cop28 in the UAE next year, both leaders emphasized during the call their commitment to enhancing climate ambition and climate action in line with their net-zero goals.
Expressing gratitude to Sheikh Mohamed for his leadership on climate issues, President Biden pledged his support for the UAE’s hosting of COP28 in 2023.
Pledging to deepen their close cooperation, both leaders also shared their common interests in stabilizing the global energy market and in increasing their renewable energy investments.
