The ninth and potentially last hearing of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021 insurrection on the Capitol will focus on former president Donald Trump’s “state of mind” as the attack unfolded.
The congressional committee investigating the attack on the Capitol by Trump’s supporters promised to present new evidence on Thursday.
It will reconvene today after a two-and-a-half month break with new video footage showing efforts to respond to the violence as it was unfolding.
A focus is expected to be on Trump’s state of mind, and his involvement as the events unfolded, illustrating Trump’s centrality to the scheme from the time prior to the election.
The hearing could be the panel’s last chance to convince Americans the former president played a central role in the attempt to overturn his election defeat.
The records at today’s hearing will show how Trump – who encouraged his supporters to “fight like hell” in a speech on the morning of January 6 – was repeatedly alerted to danger yet still tried to stoke the violence.
There will be no live witness testimony at the panel’s ninth public hearing this year. The new evidence is expected to include video evidence from witnesses who have not been seen at previous hearings, and information from thousands of documents obtained from the Secret Service.
The committee surpassed many observers’ expectations over the summer with a series of televised hearings that put Trump at the heart of an attempted coup – a premeditated assault on American democracy that sought to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
The hearing today will work to reclaim the spotlight less than a month before the congressional midterm elections in November.
Hundreds of Republicans who continue to back Trump’s false claim of an election steal and election fraud are running for seats.
