Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, all New Yorkers should wear face masks indoors and near crowds outside, New York City Department of Health officials said in a tweet on Friday, recommending N95, KN95, or KF94 masks for the public.
The COVID positivity rate in New York City has surged to 14%, which is the highest level since January health officials say, and Mayor Adams spoke about why the city is not using its COVID alert system.
Adams noted that the city has been planning to change its color-coded alert system since it’s not well-equipped to tackle new variants that are finding their way into NYC, and they’re continuing to prepare New Yorkers and Americans in dealing with the COVID.
The data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that the recent surge in COVID cases in New York City has been tied to the most transmissible subvariant of omicron yet, known as BA.5a subvariant, which now accounts for at least 54% of total COVID cases and can infect people with immunity from other omicron infections.
For the first time since the second week of February, more than 1,000 New Yorkers are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and the CDC says that every borough has now been upgraded to a high risk for severe disease.
