Abortions have increased in the United States after there was a long decline according to a new study. Both the number and rate of abortions increased from 2017 to 2020 after there was a long decline.
The report from the Guttmacher Institute, which is a research group in support of abortion rights, counted abortion in the U.S. for each year.
In 2020, there was 930,000 abortion. That is an increase from the previous number of 862,000 abortions in 2017. Statistic in 2017 was when national abortion figures reached their lowest point since the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that first legalized the procedure nationwide.
About one in five pregnancies ended in abortion in 2020.
The figures come as the Supreme Court is at the ready to overturn its nationwide legalization. Experts in health law and in policy said that the study shows how many women need abortions, and underscores how devastating the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn legal access to the procedure will be.
Medication abortions, which is where a patient takes a two-drug combination often referred to as the “abortion pill,” made up about 54 percent of abortions in 2020. It was the first time that the abortion pill made up more than half of abortions.
Women’s rights experts and health experts say that if the Supreme Court overturns the national right to an abortion, it does not mean abortions will go away, it means safe abortions will be ripped away. Women will still seek out abortions, experts warn, and this will ultimately put them in danger.
Guttmacher conducts the most comprehensive survey of abortion providers every three years in the U.S. It is considered to be the most complete data, even more complete than data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which does not include a few states.
Also in the statistics shows that in 2020 fewer women were getting pregnant and a larger amount of them chose an abortion.
