There are whispers that some Democrats are quietly worrying about Biden’s leadership, and his ability to fight former President Donald Trump a second time around.
Some Democratic lawmakers and party officials are frustrated with President Joe Biden’s struggle to advance the bulk of his agenda, leading them to believe that maybe he should not run again for president in 2024.
The New York Times interviewed nearly 50 Democrats, including officials, from county leaders to members of Congress, as well as some voters who backed Biden in 2020. The interviews revealed the Democrat party is alarmed about the Republicans’ rising strength.
Concerns come as the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol began its opening hearings. The hearings made it clear what is at stake in a 2024 election in which Trump, whose lies fueled a deadly riot that disrupted the peaceful democratic transfer of power, may be seeking a return to the White House.
The midterms are also looming in November of this year, and so are fears that the Democrats will lose their majority in Congress. This would mean even less ability to move key issues.
Some Democrats are growing frustrated with repeated failures of the Biden administration to pass big-ticket legislation on signature issues, as well as haunting efforts to move public opinion on issues.
Leaders in the Democratic Party are struggling to explain away a series of issues for their party that is beyond the control of Biden, including sky-high inflation rates, surging gas prices, the lingering Covid pandemic, mass shootings, a conservative Supreme Court gunning to end abortion rights, and more.
Many Democrats say that Biden does not get the credit that he deserves.
No matter what, all of those massive issues are hanging overhead in the United States. And whoever the Democrats push forward as their top candidate for the 2024 election is, they will have to address these severe issues, and more.
