United Kingdom Marks Historic Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Britain marked this week Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee, record-breaking 70 years on the throne, Reuters reported.

Four days of celebration rang in the historic occasion, ranging from military parades and a church service, to street parties across London and the country. There was also a pop concert outside of Buckingham Palace.

Elizabeth, at 96-years-old, marked a huge seven decades on the throne in February.

Two public holidays in the UK were set aside to create a four-day weekend for the country, including events commemorating her reign.

Queen Elizabeth was thanked for being “in the saddle” for 70 years as head of state at a service today to celebrate the jubilee, however, she missed the event due to “mobility issues.”

Other senior members of the royal family joined a congregation of politicians, charity figures and groups the queen has supported for the National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Her son and heir, Prince Charles, who is now 73, represented her.

The four days of celebration began yesterday. The Queen waved to crowds from Buckingham Palace following a military parade and the Royal Air Force flypast.

Later Elizabeth led the lighting of the Principal Platinum Jubilee Beacon at her Windsor Castle home.

The Queen has been forced to cancel a series of engagements recently because of “mobility problems.”

Leaders around the world congratulated the Queen on her record-breaking 70 years on the throne. U.S. President Joe Biden said that he and Jill wished the Queen a joyful Jubilee celebration, and thanked her for her friendship to the American people.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama also congratulated Queen Elizabeth, saying that “your life has been a gift,” not just for the UK, but for the world. He said it was with great gratitude for her leadership and kindness that she has shown Obama and his family.
