Today is the final day of the World Economic Forum. A notably downbeat Davos will wrap up today. Much of the focus this week was on Ukraine, which was also the case today as the annual event came to a close, The Guardian reports.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko spoke this morning about how to rebuild the Ukrainian capital after the Russian war ends, and what aid will be needed from the international community.
It echoed calls for more international support from Ukraine in an address made last night by Ukrainian Minister for the Economy Yulia Svyrydenko. The Ukrainian Minister said that the military may win battles, but the economy will play a key role in winning the war. He called specifically for support from economic partners.
The head of the Ukrainian delegation to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Dr. Svitlana Krakovska, also spoke yesterday. She said Ukraine must be rebuilt with carbon neutrality. The leading scientist called for the attacked cities to be rebuilt in climate-neutral ways, saying that the reconstruction can be an example to the rest of Europe.
Chancellor of Germany closed out the Davos World Economic Forum, giving the final keynote address, sharply condemning Russia’s war in Ukraine, and calling for global cooperation to overcome life-threatening challenges such as climate change, dependency on fossil fuels, and hunger.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to return to a world in which “the strongest dictate what is right,” and a world in which freedom, sovereignty and self-determination are gone. He called Putin’s war politics “imperialism.”
The German Chancellor said that all powers need to work together to solve threats facing the world, including huge issues like climate change, global warming, fossil fuels, energy, and world hunger.
“History is at a turning point,” Scholz said.
