After Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a new bill on Monday that blocks classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation by primary teachers, a political action committee initiated a billboards campaign urging people to “say gay”.
The law should take effect on July 1.
Florida’s controversial Parental Rights in Education bill – dubbed “Don’t Say Gay” bill by critics – prohibits sexual orientation or gender identity classroom instruction in kindergarten through grade 3 in a manner that is not developmentally or age-appropriate.
The Southern Progress PAC’s billboard campaign has seen billboards propped up in Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and Orlando, encouraging people to “say gay”.
Pointing out that not only it’s OK to say gay but that is also encouraged, PAC’s volunteer Ally Sammarco underscored that wants to make it clear it’s OK to talk about who people are and where they come from without anyone stopping them from doing that.
Sammarco said that a bill like this is not innocent at all and warned it can have very deadly consequences for kids, especially those of the LGBTQ community.
Disney vowed to support the efforts of all the national and state organizations in their try to repeal the law with the Walt Disney Company spokesperson saying that their goal is to push the legislature to repeal this law or the courts to strike it down
Claiming on Tuesday that Disney’s statement has crossed the line, Gov. DeSantis pushed back against the company pointing out that their statement is fundamentally dishonest.
He underlined that the law would make sure that parents can send their kids to school to get an education, not an indoctrination.
DeSantis stressed that the state of Florida is governed by the interests of its people and not by the California corporate executives’ demands, noting that they do not run or control this state.
