Former US President Donald Trump had taken classified documents to his private house in Mar-a-Lago Florida along with the boxes filled with other documents, the United States National Archives said on Friday.
The agency confirmed in a letter to Congress that it found documents marked as classified national security information in the 15 boxes recovered from former President Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago.
David Ferriero, the Archivist of the US, wrote in a letter to Democratic Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, chair of the House Oversight Committee, that NARA staff has been in communication with the Department of Justice because they identified classified information in the boxes.
NARA said that the Trump administration did not capture and preserve certain social media records and noted it has also learned that some White House staff were using non-official electronic messaging accounts to conduct official business that was not copied or forwarded into their official electronic messaging accounts.
Trump claimed in a statement on Friday that NARA has found nothing, but was given, upon request, Presidential Records in an ordinary and routine process and in accordance with the Presidential Records Act.
He claimed that there would be no story here if this was anyone but him.
Meanwhile, questions mount over whether Trump could be investigated by federal law enforcement for a possible crime over his handling of presidential records, including classified ones after NARA officials suspected he may have violated laws and asked the DOJ to probe the former president.
NARA letter to the Congress comes just over a week after reports that White House personnel occasionally found documents clogging Trump’s toilet in the White House while he was still in office.
