Black Lives Matter Suspended from Amazon’s Charity Platform

Amazon’s charity platform has kicked out the beleaguered Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation for failing to disclose where tens of millions in donations it received nearly two years ago have ended up.

BLMGNF has released on February 11 its long-overdue federal tax filing after previously changing its accounting period from a calendar year to a fiscal year, so the filing shows no contributions or grants between January and June.

It now likely has another year to file its return for the remainder of 2020.

An Amazon spokesperson told The Post that AmazonSmile, which gives a portion of eligible purchases on the online shopping site to charities, had to temporarily suspend the group Thursday since the organization fell out of compliance with the rules in several states, which have rules for nonprofits and organizations participating in AmazonSmile.

According to documents filed with the California Attorney General, BLMGNF took in more than $65 million in donations in October 2020 from Thousand Currents, a charity that manages assets of grassroots non-profits, but the group has so far failed to disclose what it did with the cash, prompting several states to revoke its ability to collect donations.

The Department of Justice in California, where the group is based, warned BLMGNF’s leaders earlier this month that they would be personally liable” for any delinquency fees and fines.

Amazon spokesperson said that Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation’s temporary suspension will last until they come into compliance, adding that Amazon plans to hold any funds that have accumulated for BLMGNF till then.

According to its website, AmazonSmile has raised more than $300 million for charities.
