Acting in his capacity as the Chair of the NATO-Russia Council, the NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has convened a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council on January 12, a source in the alliance has confirmed, calling on Moscow to consider their concerns about Russia’s actions.
The NATO official told TASS on Tuesday that any dialogue with Russia would have to proceed on a reciprocity basis, be based on the European security’s core principles and foundational documents, and develop in consultation with NATO’s partners in Europe.
The agenda of the meeting has not been revealed so far by both parties.
Moscow has confirmed earlier its intention to discuss its security guarantees requests with NATO, especially regarding the NATO forces’ deployment of near Russian borders, the withdrawal of US nuclear weapons from Europe as well as abandoning the plans to offer Ukraine and Georgia membership in the alliance.
Stoltenberg, however, has noted in December his proposal to convene the NATO-Russia Council in early 2022 to address the situation in and around Ukraine and tackle the claims about the Russian troops’ alleged buildup near the border with Ukraine.
Russia expects to ensure legal security guarantees that the US president allegedly agreed with during the Dec. 31 phone conversation between US President Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
Putin has allegedly warned Biden that that possible new US sanctions against Moscow could result in the severance of the ties between the two countries and seriously damage Russia’s relations with the West in general.
The consultations on security guarantees between the United States and Russia are likely to kick off with a meeting in Geneva on January 10.
