According to Iraqi security sources, air defenses at a military base hosting US forces intercepted and shot down two drones on Monday, on the anniversary of the assassination of a top Iranian commander by a US drone.

The US Victory base in Baghdad International Airport, an Iraqi base that had been housing American forces, came under drone attacks but the drones were shot down without incident or casualties by the counter-missile system.

The footage of the debris provided by the coalition showed the two destroyed drones with “Soleimani’s revenge” note written on the wing of one drone.

Baghdad’s international airport was the site of the Jan. 2, 2020, US drone strike that killed the former commander of the elite Quds Force Qassem Soleimani, that former President Trump called the world’s top terrorist, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

Tehran has vowed at the time to hold those who killed Soleimani and Al-Muhandis responsible.

An official of the U.S.-led international military coalition commented on the attack calling it a dangerous attack on a civilian airport and pointed that the defense system of the base had engaged two fixed-wing suicide drones that were shot down without incident.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far but some Iraqi officials say that Iran-backed armed groups have claimed responsibility for similar incidents in the past.

As part of the so-called “Soleimani’s revenge” on Monday, pro-Iranian hackers have attacked the website of the Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post and the Twitter account of Maariv.

Both newspapers were targeted with a message in English and Hebrew saying: “We are close to you where you do not think about it” accompanied by a photo of a model Dimona nuclear facility being blown up, that remained online for about two hours.
