World Health Organization Says Omicron Can Be Fought Like Delta

Actions made to combat the delta version should still be successful in combating the newly discovered omicron variation, according to World Health Organization officials.

Actions made to combat the delta version should still be successful in combating the newly discovered omicron variation, according to World Health Organization officials, The Hill reports.

According to the Associated Press, WHO Regional Emergency Director Babatunde Olowokure said at a video briefing that such precautions included wearing face covers, a renewed emphasis on vaccinations, and social distance.

Scientists are seeking to understand more about the omicron variation, which was initially discovered in South Africa the month before and has been labeled a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization.

According to the Associated Press, a few omicron instances have been recorded in the United States since the country first identified it within its borders on Wednesday, and it has already been spotted in over 30 countries.

Some countries and health experts have opposed the travel prohibitions on countries in southern Africa, or internationally in the case of Israel, stating they are concerned that states are being penalized for being upfront about their COVID-19 data.

During a CNN town hall, President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci, who previously upheld countries for enacting travel bans, said he “felt really badly” about the government’s “tough decision” to enact their own travel restrictions to address to the worries about the omicron variation.
