Security Official Nathan Sales to Be Nominated as New Counterterrorism Coordinator

President Donald Trump plans to nominate former Homeland Security official Nathan Sales as the State Department’s coordinator for counterterrorism, the White House said Friday evening, The Hill reports.

Sales, who teaches on national security and counterterrorism at Syracuse University, previously served as deputy assistant secretary for policy at the Department of Homeland Security and as senior counsel in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Policy.

The State Department counterterrorism coordinator position was among a number of open senior posts for which the Trump administration had not put forward a nominee.

Trump has emphasized the need for stronger security measures following the deadly attacks in the United Kingdom this year, most recently after attacks on and near the London Bridge last weekend.

“We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. If we don’t get smart it will only get worse,” he tweeted after the London attacks last week.

Referring to the London attacks, Trump last week also renewed his call for the courts to approve his executive order banning travel from six Muslim-majority countries.

“We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety”, Trump noted last week.
