The United States Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman met on Monday with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent to discuss further strengthening the bilateral relationship and the potential way forward in light of the developments in Afghanistan, the US Embassy in Uzbekistan informed on its website.
The Deputy Secretary congratulated President Mirziyoyev and the Uzbek people on Uzbekistan’s 30th year of independence and thanked them for the constructive engagement on Afghanistan, underscoring the importance of the US strategic partnership with Uzbekistan and expressing at the same time gratitude for Uzbekistan’s close cooperation in Afghanistan.
They also discussed joint efforts to combat the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic through vaccine distribution.
Urging continuing progress on the reforms in the economy, democracy and human rights in Uzbekistan, Sherman reiterated US support for Uzbekistan’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During her visit in Tashkent, the Deputy Secretary also met with Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov on Sunday as well as with an interagency delegation including Uzbek National Security Advisor Viktor Makhmudov, Minister of Justice Ruslanbek Davlatov, and with Ismatullah Irgashev, Special Representative of the President Mirziyoyev for Afghanistan.
Discussing with Kamilov, Deputy Secretary Sherman welcomed Uzbekistan’s leadership on regional and transnational issues through the C5+1 format, reaffirming the importance of the US-Uzbekistan strategic partnership.
Sherman also commended Uzbek’s commitment to setting ambitious targets to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Uzbek Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Yusup Kabulzhanov told TASS on Sunday that Sherman and Kamilov exchanged views on the situation in the region and developments in Afghanistan, stressing the necessity of promoting the process of broad national reconciliation and forming an inclusive government.
Kamilov, on the other side, thanked the US for donating more than five million Moderna and Pfizer coronavirus vaccines.
