UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to confirm Covid booster jabs for the over-50 population. The program followed approval given by government scientists for 12 to 15 year olds to receive vaccines in the UK.
The government has now received the final recommendations from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI), a watchdog who advises the UK health departments, on whether to move forward with the third dose.
The third dose would top up the immunity of those whose protection has likely taped off or weakened since receiving the vaccination.
JCVI has recommended that a Pfizer/BioNTech jab be used as a booster shot, regardless of which vaccine the patient received for the first two shots. Moderna is proposing half doses for boosters of its vaccination.
The three vaccines used in the UK — Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZenaca — have all been approved to be used as boosters by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), but so far JCVI has only recommended Pfizer.
The booster rollout will follow the same groups as the original vaccine rollout, first offering to the same nine priority groups, proceeding from most to least vulnerable. It will start with over-50s, the extremely vulnerable, as well as health and social care workers.
