A day after a swastika was found carved into the wall of an elevator inside the State Department’s main headquarters in Washington, DC, President Biden condemned the hateful vandalism in a tweet late Tuesday emphasizing that anti-Semitism has no place in the State Department, in his administration or anywhere in the world, New York Post writes.
He pointed in his message that we all have responsibility to stand up to bigotry wherever we find it and not to give hate safe harbor.
Informing that the Nazi symbol of hate had been removed from the State Department’s elevator, Secretary of State Antony Blinken also addressed the vandalism on Twitter, saying that incidents like this are painful reminders that anti-Semitism isn’t a relic of the past.
Blinken, who is stepson of a Holocaust survivor, underlined the importance of being relentless in standing up and rejecting anti-Semitism, which often goes hand in hand with racism, homophobia, xenophobia and other hatreds that have no place in the US.
He informed in his message that the incident is under investigation while spokeswoman Jalina Porter explained that the State Department is working on the nomination of a special envoy to combat anti-Semitism.
Several leading Jewish organizations in the US were previously prompted to call on President Biden to condemn violence against Jewish communities by the series of anti-Semitic attacks in the country.
