Veteran and Florida Rep. Michael Waltz praised his House colleagues that voted 407-16 to expedite visas for Afghan interpreters who helped US during the nearly 20-year war in Afghanistan, pointing there’s no one that deserve more the merit-based immigration status, Fox News reports.
Waltz pointed that those are people that fought, bled and died with US troops in Afghanistan, and that he can’t think of any group that’s more deserving and that has earned that status as they were literally willing to die alongside American soldiers.
He explained that US might going to need local allies on the ground and that all eyes are watching to see if it’s going to keep the given promises.
He explained that it’s not just the right thing to do morally but also from a national security standpoint considering the warnings from Biden’s own intelligence community that Al-Qaeda and IS can come back roaring in the wake of a Taliban takeover.
The bill removes the requirement that applicants must prove they are under threat as a result of their work with the US government, speeding up the process.
Ahead of the vote on the bill he introduces, Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo, a former Army Ranger who served three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, warned that Taliban’s intent is to hunt down and kill Afghans who have served alongside Americans the past 20 years and saved many American lives.
