Two border wall contracts in the Laredo sector of the US-Mexico border to construct 31 miles of border wall along the Rio Grande, funded with the Department of Homeland Security’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 appropriations, has been terminated on Friday by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Government Executive reports.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a press release that CBP is terminating two border wall contracts in the Laredo Sector that are not necessary according to the DHS Border Wall Plan that has been implementing President Biden’s Proclamation.
The Homeland Security release stated that construction on the two Laredo sector projects has not yet started and no land acquisition has begun, pointing also that other contracts are being reviewed to establish if they’re unnecessary as well.
The Department of Defense funds allocated for border wall construction were stopped in April by the Biden administration that continues to call on Congress to cancel remaining border wall funding and to divert the funds toward smarter border security measures that are proven to be more effective at improving safety and security at the border.
