The Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport informed on Tuesday that the he airspace over Geneva may be closed for civil aviation during the summit of Russian and U.S. leaders, scheduled for 16 June, Swiss media report
As Switzerland is preparing to monitor the airspace,the department’s spokesman Lorenz Frischknecht pointed they cannot provide more details apart the possible measures that may include airspace surveillance, deployment of combat helicopters and ground-based air defense systems as well as restrictions on the airspace use for civil aviation.
As it was officially confirmed in late May by Moscow and Washington, Biden and Putin will meet June 16 in Geneva to discuss important issues regarding strained bilateral relations.
Guy Parmelin, who holds the rotating Swiss presidency this year, praised both countries for choosing Geneva for the summit, and the decision was also welcomed by the Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.
