Eight Killed in Shooting at FedEx Facility in Indianapolis

At least 8 people were dead after a shooting rampage at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis on Thursday night. The shooter opened fire at the building near the Indianapolis International Airport at about 11:10 p.m., according to KEYT-TV.

A total of 8 people were declared dead at the scene. Others were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries, the station said. Police believe the shooter took his own life at the scene.

Indianapolis Metro Police Department spokesperson Genae Cook said at a news conference early Friday that eight people were killed at the FedEx facility near the Indianapolis International Airport.

“This is very heartbreaking,” Cook said.

At least four people were hospitalized, including one person with critical injuries, Cook said. Two others were treated at the scene and released. No law enforcement officers were injured.

Police established a family unification center at the Holiday Inn at 8555 Stansted Drive. Police are asking anyone who has family members who work at the FedEx Ground facility that cannot be reached to meet at the Holiday Inn. IMPD chaplains and others will be at the hotel to assist families.

A FedEx employee, Jeremiah Miller, told the outlet he saw a shooter outside, through an entrance door.

“I saw a man with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open,” Miller said. “I immediately ducked down and got scared,” he said.

Miller’s coworker, Timothy Boillat, said he saw one person on the ground near a vehicle.

One of the shooting victims was shot in her left arm as she sat in her car in the parking lot, her uncle, Parminder Singh told CBS 4 reporter Courtney Crown.

“She called. She said there was a shooting in the Fedex [building],” Singh said.

He said his niece was hospitalized and is doing “fine.”

The shooting resulted in the brief closure of Interstate 70, which has since reopened with no access to Ameriplex Parkway. The Indianapolis International Airport can be accessed from both direction, police said.  FedEx released a statement after 1:30 a.m. Friday.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members following the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis,” the company said in a statement.

“Our most heartfelt sympathies are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence. The safety of our team members is our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with investigating authorities.”
