Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the Senate Minority Leader blasted Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Monday, calling her embrace of “loony lies and conspiracy theories” a “cancer for the Republican Party,” reported The Hill.
“Somebody who’s suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shooting were pre-staged, and Clintons crashed JFK Jr.’s airplane is not living in reality. This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party,” said McConnell in a statement shared with The Hill.
In his three-sentence statement, McConnell is not mentioning Greene by name, but the scathing remarks he gave about a freshman GOP lawmaker from the other chamber, suggests that he recognises the potential damage her violent rhetoric and bizarre conspiracy theories could inflict on the congressional Republicans.
“The real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose gracefully,” responded Greene on Twitter.
A threat came from Democrats, as they want to force a floor vote to expel the controversial Georgia Republican from the Education and Labor Committee and the Budget Committee if House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) doesn’t remove her first.
McCarthy is set to meet Greene in Washington on Tuesday. Some Republicans don’t see McCarthy removing her from the committees, given that she has the support from former President Trump, who still has big influence within the GOP.
McConnell’s comments will surely raise the pressure on McCarthy to act. If McCarthy punts the issue to Democrats, it could force some House Republicans to take a difficult vote.
“Of course she should be removed. While we can’t prevent her from calling herself a Republican, we can take a stand, and need to,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) told The Hill on Monday.
