Andrew Yang on Wednesday during the Democratic debate joked that if he’s elected president in 2020, his first words to Russian President Vladimir Putin would offer condolences for winning over Trump.
“Sorry I beat your guy,” Yang said during the fifth debate when asked what he would say in his first call with Putin.
The comments were obviously aimed at President Donald Trump whose 2016 presidential victory was at the center of a years-long investigation into whether Russian officials sought to interfere in the U.S. political process.
Yang said that Russia’s interference in American democracy would also be a key topic of discussion in a phone call with Putin.
“I would say the days of meddling in our elections are over,” said Yang, a former tech executive.
National security officials have already warned that Moscow is taking steps to meddle in the 2020 presidential race.
Former Vice President Joe Biden went toe-to-toe with billionaire Tom Steyer over their climate credentials during the fifth Democratic presidential debate on Wednesday.
Steyer, who has sought to brand himself as the climate candidate, said he would use his presidential powers to declare the climate crisis an emergency on his first day in office.
“I am the only person on this stage who will say climate is the No. 1 priority for me,” Steyer said.
That touched a nerve with Biden, who said, “I don’t need a lecture from my friend.” He went on to add that climate change is “the existential threat” and “the No. 1 issue.”
