President Donald Trump’s top adviser on Asia, Matt Pottinger, will be named new deputy national security adviser.
The personnel move was announced by the newly named national security adviser Robert O’Brien, who was traveling to New York City with the President for the United Nations General Assembly.
“I think Matt’s one of the most impressive young foreign policy/national defense/national security experts in the government. He’s got a wonderful personality, I think he’s a team player. He’s going to help me bring some cohesion to the [national security council],” O’Brien said on Air Force One.
Pottinger has been a valuable asset in the Trump administration who played a significant role in Trump’s most high profile foreign policy plays, such as President Trump’s summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Pottinger previously worked as a correspondent at The Wall Street Journal, enlisting in the Marine Corps in 2005. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and joined the Trump administration in 2017, The Hill informs.
He will remain involved in Asia issues although a replacement is to be announced in the near future, O’Brien said.
O’Brien himself was named national security adviser last week, replacing John Bolton. Before that, he served as the Trump administration’s special envoy for hostage negotiations.
