The House Judiciary Committee will not impeach Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, although some Democratic presidential candidates have urged so, said the panel’s chairman, Jerrold Nadler, on Monday.
“We have our hands full with impeaching the president right now, and that’s going to take up our limited resources and time for a while,” Nadler said in an interview.
The calls for Kavanaugh’s impeachment came over the weekend, after reports emerged detailing new sexual misconduct allegations against the justice. Shortly after The New York Times released the article, Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren called for Kavanaugh’s impeachment.
President Donald Trump was quick to criticize the report after the Times changed it to say later that the alleged victim’s friends noted she did not recall the incident, CNBC informs.
Nadler added during the interview that his committee will not focus on the issue, stressing that the new allegation did not necessarily merit impeachment. He pointed out, instead, that the panel is more determined to look into whether to impeach Trump.
“Frankly, we are concentrating our resources on determining whether to impeach the president. Personally, I think the president ought to be impeached, but we have to concentrate on that for the next few months,” Nadler said.
The Democrat noted that the Judiciary Committee was focused on the FBI probe into the allegations during last year’s nomination. They will ask FBI Director Christopher Wray about that investigation when he appears before the panel in October, the chairman said.
“We are going to start looking into the adequacy of the investigation upon which the confirmation was premised,” Nadler said. “These deeds that he did years ago would be very relevant to a senator voting for or against his nomination, but once he’s there, what’s relevant now is whether he lied to the Senate,” he added, stressing that lying under oath is now more important than the allegations themselves.
