Poll Shows Biden Leading Trump in Wisconsin in Hypothetical Matchup

A Marquette University Law School poll shows that President Donald Trump is trailing behind former Vice President Joe Biden in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup in Wisconsin by a significant margin.

Biden is leading Trump 51 percent to 42 percent among registered voters in the state, while the President also trails Senator Bernie Sanders, by a 4 percent margin. Trump is tied against Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts (45% each) and Kamala Harris of California (44% each), CNN reports.

However, these numbers are not to be taken as indicators of the possible outcome in 2020 as they can change drastically by November of next year.

Biden also leads among Democratic candidates with 28 percent of registered Democrats, Democratic-leaning independents and independents who don’t lean toward either party saying he was their first choice.

Twenty percent of them have said the same of Sanders, and 17 percent of Warren. Presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg received 6 percent support in the poll, followed by Harris at 3 percent and businessman Andrew Yang with 2 percent. All other candidates received 1 percent or less.

About 13 percent of voters were undecided as to who their first choice would be for the Democratic nominee, although Biden remains the most favorable candidate, followed by Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg and Harris.

“Large portion of WI Dem voters don’t have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of prez candidates yet, other than Biden and Sanders,” a tweet by Charles Franklin, director of the MU Law poll, read.

The portion of people who would vote for President Trump is slightly lower than that of voters who approve of the job he is doing. His overall approval rating in Wisconsin is generally higher than in the rest of the country – 45 percent approve of his job as president and 53 percent disapprove, the same as in April.

The Marquette University Law School poll was conducted by phone in the period between August 25 through 29 among a random sample of 800 registered voters and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
