President Donald Trump praised UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, whom he met during the G7 meeting in the French seaside town of Biarritz.
“He needs no advice, he’s the right man for the job. This is a different person and this is a person that is going to be a great prime minister in my opinion,” Trump said in response to a question whether Johnson needs any guidance on how to deliver Brexit.
The uncertain future of the UK over its removal from the European Union is casting a shadow over the Group of 7 summit, CNBC writes. Johnson is tasked with overseeing the country’s removal from the block, which is due to happen in three months, on October 31.
The move is widely seen as one of the most important political and economic ones for Britain, but the uncertainty surrounding it has shaken global markets. Despite such uncertainty, Trump stressed that the U.S. could reach a major trade deal with the kingdom once it leaves the EU.
“We’re are having very good trade talks between the U.K. and ourselves. We’re going to do a very big trade deal, bigger than we’ve ever had with the UK,” he noted following his meeting with the British prime minister.
“At some point, they won’t have the obstacle of, they won’t have the anchor around their ankle, because that’s what they had. So, we’re going to have some very good trade talks and big numbers,” Trump continued without providing further details on the possible deal.
Johnson expressed a similar sentiment, applauding President Trump on everything he has done for the U.S. economy and saying that he, too, was looking forward to future trade deals between his country and the United States.
“We’ll be having some pretty comprehensive talks about how to take forward the relationship in all sorts of ways, particularly on trade and we are very excited about that,” Johnson said. “And I just want to actually congratulate the president on everything that the American economy is achieving, it’s fantastic to see that.”
