Democrats Blast Trump for Racist Attack on Cummings

Democrats have once again rallied to criticize President Donald Trump’s “racist” attacks on House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, saying his remarks were beneath the office of the presidency.

On Saturday morning, Trump called Cummings a “brutal bully” saying his district was “disgusting” and “corrupt” and claiming that no one “would want to live there.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke out against Trump’s attacks on the House committee chairman, saying Cummings was a “champion in the Congress and the country for civil rights and economic justice.”

Representative Katherine Clark, the vice chairwoman of the House Democratic Caucus, tweeted, “This is love of country?? These are not the words of a patriot.”

“.@RepCummings is a remarkable human w/clear, moral authority & deep commitment to justice. He’s also a phenomenal Chairman, bringing essential oversight to lawless Administration. Trump shows again he simply cannot match the Elijah’s dignity & grace,” Representative Pramila Jayapal, co-chairwoman of the House Progressive Caucus, tweeted, The Hill informs.

Some pointed to Trump’s criticism of Baltimore, part of which is included in Cummings’ district, saying that the President’s attacks were an attempt to divide the American people.

“Donald Trump hits new low with his slashing attack on @RepCummings & the people of Baltimore. Cummings is devoted to the common good, Trump to self-enrichment and glorification. ‘No human being would want to live there’ is a better description of his deranged mind,” Representative Jamie Raskin tweeted.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also stood in Cummings’ defense, calling him a “legendary coach” for the committee, which she is a member of.

“If you look at Oversight, it includes many all-stars of Congress. From @RepRaskin to @RoKhanna, Cummings is a legendary coach who brings the best out of everyone. He makes the country better. You want to be on his team,” she tweeted.

Representative Adam Schiff said Cummings was “the conscience of our caucus,” while Senator Ben Cardin called him “an example of leadership that you could learn from,” aiming his comments at Trump.

The President’s attacks came shortly after Cummings was authorized by the House Oversight and Reform Committee to subpoena records from the White House in connection with an investigation into aides’ use of personal email for official business.
