The House Oversight and Reform Committee has scheduled a vote this Thursday to hold White House counselor Kellyanne Conway in contempt for not complying with their subpoena for her testimony about repeated violations of the Hatch Act.
The committee will determine at the business meeting whether to hold Conway in contempt, a decision that would come at a time when Democrats are in a spat with the White House over compliance with congressional oversight probes.
The panel had recently sought to hear from Conway on her Hatch Act violations that prevents White House officials from speaking about elections in their official capacity. However, the White House argued she was immune from testing and barred her from appearing before the committee.
The Oversight Committee subpoenaed Conway after she refused to voluntarily appear for a testimony, The Hill writes. At the time, Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings said he would vote to hold Conway in contempt if she did not testify by July 25.
The panel grew interested in Conway after the special counsel’s office found that she had violated the Hatch Act multiple times. They recommended that she be fired, but President Donald Trump refused to do so.
Last month, the committee also voted to hold in contempt Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and on Thursday members of the panel will vote to authorize Cummings to subpoena records on White House staffers’ use of personal emails for official business.
The chairman said no documents have been produced yet by the White House.
