A new Gallup poll shows that 45 percent of Americans believe President Donald Trump should be impeached, results that come amid efforts by House Democrats to utilize their oversight powers over the White House.
In the poll, 53 percent said the President should not be impeached, with results showing discrepancies along partisan lines 7 percent of Republicans, 46 percent of independents and 81 percent of Democrats saying Trump should be impeached, The Hill writes.
What is noteworthy, Gallup says, is that support for removing President Trump from office is higher than that for former Presidents Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon during the respective controversies that shook their presidencies.
As for approval rating, Trump’s hovers around 41 percent, not diverging from the low-to-mid 40s range it has been in since the beginning of his presidency.
The poll comes at a time when House Democrats are in the midst of a fierce debate over whether to begin impeachment proceedings against President Trump. Eighty-one House Democrats support beginning the proceedings, arguing the President has obstructed justice.
They also say that impeachment could help House committees more easily obtain documents and testimony for their own oversight hearings. But Speaker Nancy Pelosi has not budged under pressure from congressional colleagues, rejecting calls about impeachment over worries that it could help consolidate Trump’s base ahead of the 2020 election.
The Gallup poll surveyed 1,018 adults from June 19 to June 30 and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
