President Donald Trump said on Monday that the woman who had accused him of allegedly raping her decades ago, writer E. Jean Carroll, was “totally lying” as well as that she was not his type.
“I’ll say it with great respect: Number one, she’s not my type. Number two, it never happened. It never happened, OK?” Trump said.
Carroll said that back in the 1990s, Trump had an encounter with her at a department store in New York and “just went at it,” allegedly cornering her in a dressing room. She said that Trump “pulled down my tights, and it was a fight,” The Hill reports.
The writer first accused the President of sexually assaulting her last Friday and Trump quickly denied the accusations. On Monday, he reiterated that the incident never happened, saying that Carroll was “totally lying.”
“Totally lying. I don’t know anything about her. I know nothing about this woman. I know nothing about her. She is — it’s just a terrible thing that people can make statements like that,” President Trump said.
Carroll was quick to follow with a response of her own, saying that Trump has a tendency to deny accusations from women claiming he had sexually assaulted them and added that she was glad she was not Trump’s type.
“He denies, he turns it around, he threatens and he attacks,” Carroll said, who detailed the alleged incident in her upcoming book that also includes a photo in which she appears beside her then-husband John Johnson, Trump and his former wife Ivana.
The President brushed off the photo, saying “Standing with my coat on in a line — give me a break — with my back to the camera. I have no idea who she is.”
As to why she only now came forward with her account of the story, Carroll said she was “a coward” and feared it would be met with retribution and dismissal.
