Turkeys, Trots, and DC Thanksgiving Traditions

By Colleen Flanagan

It’s nearly turkey day, and the clock is ticking for getting your turkey ordered for Thanksgiving in DC. No one wants to make a scene racing for the last turkey at the grocery store, and organic and locally grown turkeys are the new trend. You can now order your turkey from a range of all natural, organic, free-range, and local vendors. Fresh turkey is better turkey, and Washingtonian supplies a list of DC-area turkey farms.

However if cooking is not your thing, Washingtonian also provides a list of more than thirty restaurants offering Thanksgiving dinner for customers. The restaurants range from three-course menus to à la carte meals at Bibiana and P.J. Clark’s, respectively.

And, finally, if you can’t cook and can’t leave, keep with the American tradition and order Thanksgiving dinner from home. There are plenty of full meals, partial menu items, and of course, pies, to pick up and take home with you. See Washingtonian’s suggestions for your Thanksgiving take-out indulgences.

To work off your Thanksgiving caloric intake, or cheer on fearless runners, DC, Virginia, and Maryland are home to several Turkey Trots. DC’s most notable is SOME’s 11th Annual Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger, which sponsors meals and necessary goods to the homeless.

If you’re not one for running, enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with a visit to Georgetown’s new Washington Harbour skating rink, opening for the first time on Monday, November 19th. Sharpen your skates and grab some hot chocolate to ring in the holiday season.
