Britain is facing tough times, as Theresa May resigned as Prime Minister a couple of days ago, and now Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that the European Union will not renegotiate the Brexit deal.
The future of Brexit is uncertain as Theresa Pay decided to resign from her position and as a consequence, the Conservative Party may now elect a new Prime Minister who wants to be more decisive in terms of exiting the European Union, as one of the candidates to replace May, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, said that it would be a political suicide to pursue a no-deal Brexit and Boris Jonson who said that Britain should leave with or without a deal by the end of October.
Hunt added that he would try for a new agreement that would take his country out of the EU customs union while respecting legitimate concerns around the border with Ireland. Hunt voted against Brexit back in 2016. Unfortunately, EU officials said that there will be no renegotiation, as just before a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels Juncker said:
“I will have a short meeting with Theresa May, but I was crystal clear: There will be no renegotiation.’’
Leo Varadkar, the Prime Minister of Ireland, said that he believed the risk of Britain getting out of the European Union without a deal is growing, as he told the reporters:
“Well, I think there is a growing risk of a no deal. There’s a possibility that the new British prime minister may try to repudiate the withdrawal agreement.’’
Many Brexit supporters opposed her deal because of a backstop that requires Britain to adopt some EU rules indefinitely unless a future arrangement is found to keep open the land border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, Reuters informs.
If things stay as they are now, Britain will automatically leave the Union on October 31 without an agreement unless the parliament approves one.
