President Donald Trump will meet with his South Korean counterpart next month when he is scheduled to travel to the country as part of his trip to Asia before attending the G20 economic summit in Osaka, Japan.
The visit was confirmed by the White House, which said that Trump will meet with Moon Jae-in to discuss the denuclearization of the peninsula and their bilateral relations, but failed to specify an exact date for the meeting. The G20 is taking place on June 28 and 29, during which time Trump is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“President Trump and President Moon will continue their close coordination on efforts to achieve the final, fully verified denuclearization of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The two leaders will also discuss ways to strengthen the United States-Republic of Korea alliance and the friendship between our two peoples,” the White House said.
The meeting comes shortly after talks between President Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un collapsed due to Kim’s insistence that the U.S. lift all sanctions on his country and Trump’s refusal to do so. Since then, Kim’s hermit regime has continued testing nuclear weapons, CNN writes.
The President insisted last week that his relationship with Kim remains unchanged, although he acknowledged that “nobody’s happy about” the new tests.
“The relationship continues, but we’ll see what happens. They want to negotiate, they’re talking about negotiating, but I don’t think they’re ready to negotiate,” Trump said.
Moon has provided significant support to the U.S. in pushing the North to abandon its nuclear program. He most recently met with President Trump at the White House last month.
