President Trump to Travel to Japan Next Month for Meeting with Abe, New Emperor

President Donald Trump will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the end of April before visiting Japan next month, the White House announced on Thursday.

Trump will host the Japanese prime minister and his wife, Akie Abe, on April 26 and 27 when the two men are to discuss ongoing efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and trade. From May 25-28, Trump and first lady Melania will visit Japan as the first guests after the country’s imperial transition and the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito next month, The Hill informs.

The White House added that the President will meet with the new emperor and will also hold a bilateral meeting with Abe.

“The state visit will deepen the close bonds between the American and Japanese people and will highlight the continued importance of our alliance and partnership,” press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

A second visit to Japan will come in June when President Trump is to travel to the country for a second time for the Group of 20 summit in Osaka. The President’s last visit to Japan, a close ally of the U.S., came in November 2017 as part of Trump’s multicountry trip to Asia. He has hosted Abe, with whom Trump has a close personal relationship, several times.

The two have met at the president’s Mar-a-Lago resort and played golf while discussing issues such as trade. Trump has been pushing for a new trade deal with the Asian nation, although the time is still unclear.

Japan has also been a major American partner in its efforts to persuade North Korea to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.
