Special counsel Robert Mueller has submitted his confidential report to Attorney General William Barr, indicating that his two-year probe has finally ended.
According to sources, the report will not include any further indictments.
A Justice Department spokeswoman said Congress has been notified of the transfer to Barr, who after reviewing the report will deliver a “report” of his own to the top Democrats and Republicans on the House and Senate judiciary committees.
He has promised to be transparent, telling the chairmen of the Congressional committees that he is reviewing the report and “may be in a position to advise you of the Special Counsel’s principal conclusions as soon as this weekend.” Barr added that before he releases what he calls his own “report,” he will “consult with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Special Counsel Mueller to determine what other information from the report can be released to Congress and the public consistent with the law.”
ABC News writes that according to sources, President Donald Trump was “glad it’s over.” His attorneys, Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow, expressed a similar sentiment.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said late Friday that the “White House has not received or been briefed on the special counsel’s report.”
Mueller’s investigation began shortly after the firing of FBI Director James Comey and looked into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russians. It also focused on the Russian disinformation campaign, as well as on the release of thousands of sensitive emails stolen by hackers from the Democratic National Committee and other Democratic targets.
Trump and his GOP allies have continuously attacked the probe, with the President calling it a “witch hunt.” Rosenstein has defended the probe, disputing Trump’s description.
“We follow the rule of law,” Rosenstein insisted last year. “[And] when we confront foreign interference in American elections, it’s important for us to avoid thinking politically as Republicans or Democrats and instead to think patriotically as Americans.”
