Officials in Canada stated on Tuesday that the extradition of an executive at the Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei from Canada was formally requested by the U.S. government.
According to The Wall Street Journal, a spokesperson for Canada’s justice department confirmed that they had received a formal request from the U.S. seeking the extradition of Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s chief financial officer who was arrested in December at the request of U.S. officials.
The Journal writes that the Canadian justice department has until March to review the extradition request and determine whether it can advance in court.
Meng, who is accused of violating trade sanctions against Iran, was released on bail in December but must remain in Canada while she awaits possible extradition proceedings.
The formal request for her extradition comes after the U.S. on Monday filed criminal charges against Huawei, alleging that the firm stole intellectual property from T-Mobile and violated U.S. sanction orders.
The U.S. is also currently in the midst of a trade dispute with China. A Chinese delegation is in Washington, D.C., this week for trade negotiations with the U.S.
