Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is clapping back at Republicans that have slammed her after she expressed hardship to afford rent in Washington, D.C. as well as the Bronx, which is an area she is representing.
Prior to her taking office, she stated that she had to wait for her congress-member income to go into effect so that she could be able to pay rent in Washington, D.C.
Ocasio-Cortez said in November that “there are many little ways in which our electoral system isn’t even designed (nor prepared) for working-class people to lead,” adding that difficulties affording rent in both D.C. and the area one represents is one of them, Newsweek reported.
After facing backlash over her transparency, with some commentators accusing AOC, as the 29-year-old has come to be known, of putting on “an act,” Ocasio-Cortez hit out at critics on Sunday for “taking cheap shots.”
“The thing Republicans taking cheap shots forget to mention is that it’s about having trouble affording a SECOND apartment,” Ocasio-Cortez stated in a tweet. “I live in the Bronx and work in D.C. Need a spot in both. But I understand how they can’t conceive of a life where people don’t casually maintain two homes.”
The New York congresswoman made the comments in response to a tweet from activist Jordan Uhl, who said it was “great that @AOC could even maintain rent while campaigning and especially during the post-election/pre-swearing in period.”
“Expecting her to easily drop serious cash in another high-rent area is ludicrous and only perpetuates the idea that the wealthy are worthy electeds,” Uhl said.
