House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy posted a tweet last week claiming three Democratic donors, all of whom are Jewish, were trying to “buy” the November midterms, but not long after deleted the tweet.
“We cannot allow Soros, Steyer, and Bloomberg to BUY this election! Get out and vote Republican November 6th. #MAGA,” he wrote, referring to billionaires George Soros and Tom Steyer as well as former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
However, the tweet was soon met with harsh criticism by the platform’s users, who pointed to its insensitivity considering the fact that only a day before a pipe bomb sent to Soros’ New York home was intercepted by authorities, CNN writes.
A similar suspicious package was also sent to Steyer, another critic of President Donald Trump, likely containing one of the dozen pipe bombs sent exclusively to public figures critical of Trump, including former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Authorities believe the packages were sent by Cesar Sayoc, a 56-year-old Florida man who was charged on Friday with five federal crimes.
Steyer, who is running a campaign to impeach the President, called for such a move following the discovery of the suspicious package.
“We’re thankful that everyone we work with is safe. We are seeing a systematic attack on our democracy that extends much further than just one isolated terrorist in Florida. That’s why we are running an impeachment petition to end the culture of lawlessness in our country,” he tweeted Friday.
The former New York mayor, on his part, has been making sizable donations to Democratic candidates around the country. Earlier this month, Bloomberg said he would donate $20 million to PAC which aims to flip the Senate. He has also been giving millions for Democratic ads ahead of the midterms.
McCarthy’s tweet came only days a synagogue was attacked by a man who had previously expressed anti-Semitic sentiments. The GOP leader said the attack was “heinous” and said that it was “perpetrated by anti-Semitism and hate.”
Democratic Representative Adam Schiff, who himself is Jewish, expressed his belief that McCarthy’s criticism of Soros was driven by his Jewish faith.
“There are a lot of people (who) are generous to the Democratic Party. The fact that he’s become a symbol is not an accident,” Schiff noted. “The fact that they’re promulgating this falsehood that he’s funding the caravan is an effort to give rebirth to this blood libel, that Jews are bringing impurity to the country, they’re bringing other people to dilute the purity of the country.”
