Graham Says Trump Should Re-Nominate Kavanaugh if Senate Vote Fails

Lindsey Graham

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Monday night that should Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination fail in the Senate, President Donald Trump needs to re-nominate him and leave it up to voters to decide whether they want Kavanaugh on the court.

“Here’s what I would tell the President: I would appeal the verdict of the Senate to the ballot box,” Graham said to Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “This good man should not be destroyed. If you legitimize this process by one vote short, we’ll be on to the next person. I’d hate to be the next person nominated. I would feel horrible that we destroyed Kavanaugh.”

Graham then said that if he were president he would re-nominate Kavanaugh and “take this case to the American people and I’d ask voters in Indiana, in Missouri, in North Dakota and other places where Trump won…and see if the voters want to appeal the verdict of their senator.”

However, Graham expressed confidence that Kavanaugh’s nomination would not reach that point and that the FBI investigation into the allegations made against him would not prove anything new that would dissuade senators from voting for him.

“I don’t think we’re going to find anything new from this supplemental FBI investigation to take Jeff from yes to no,” he said, referring to Senator Jeff Flake who indicated recently that he may vote no on Kavanaugh in light of new accusations of sexual misconduct against the nominee.

Graham also noted that Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, who likewise expressed concerns, only “want to make sure the FBI did their homework to check the committee’s work, that our work was good. I think that’s what this is all about.”

Last week, during Kavanaugh’s testimony on the allegations, Graham blasted Democrats, saying they have destroyed the nominee’s life with the sexual assault allegations and their handling, which he deemed “the most unethical sham since I’ve been in politics.”
