Another woman accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault has come forward, sparking outrage among Democrats who are demanding that his nomination process be put to a halt.
Kavanaugh immediately denied the accusations, published in a New Yorker report on Sunday, calling them part of a Democratic smear campaign. The second accuser was one of Kavanaugh’s fellow Yale students, who claims the incident took place about three decades ago.
“This alleged event from 35 years ago did not happen. The people who knew me then know that this did not happen, and have said so. This is a smear, plain and simple,” he said. “I look forward to testifying on Thursday about the truth, and defending my good name – and the reputation for character and integrity I have spent a lifetime building –against these last-minute allegations,” Kavanaugh added.
The latest developments come amid arrangements for Kavanaugh’s first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, to testify on Thursday. Deborah Ramirez, the second woman to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, has alleged that the judge appeared to have thrust his genitals in her face at a drunken party during their freshman year.
Following the latest allegations, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Dianne Feinstein, called on the committee’s chairman Republican Senator Chuck Grassley to order “immediate postponement” of Kavanaugh’s nomination.
“I also ask that the newest allegations of sexual misconduct be referred to the FBI for investigation and that you join our request for the White House to direct the FBI to investigate the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford as well as these new claims,” she wrote, according to CNN.
In response, Grassley said that Democrats withheld information on purpose and accused them of dropping this information at “politically opportune moments.” He also said Democrats were “more interested in a political takedown than pursuing allegations through a bipartisan and professional investigative process.”
