With July on track to go down as the Earth’s hottest month on record, climate change has reached a terrifying level, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned, demanding stronger action to reduce fossil-fuel consumption to avoid greater consequences.
Citing data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, Guterres claimed that July will be the hottest month ever recorded, announcing the beginning of ‘the era of global boiling’ with unbreathable air and unbearable heat.
UN chief noted that in such conditions, the level of fossil-fuel profits and climate inaction is unacceptable, stressing that humanity is on the hot seat.
Copernicus director Carlo Buontempo, meanwhile, underscored that the July record will not be an isolated event as due to the extreme weather, seasonal forecasts indicate that temperatures are likely to remain well above average as a harsh reality of climate change and a foretaste of the future.
