Washington Expects Big Results from Kyiv’s Counteroffensive

US’s support for Kyiv’s war effort hinges on the success of the ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces, Washington’s officials are telling their Ukrainian counterparts, Politico reported.

The US State Department and National Security Council recently told Ukrainian officials asking if they could count on US support in the future that they’ll see how the counteroffensive goes despite repeated promises of President Joe Biden to back Ukraine for as long as it takes.

Kyiv officials who are wondering if the US help will continue through next year’s election season and a potential power change in the White House are now left feeling confused and anxious about the continuation of the US support after this financial year, which ends in September.

Ukraine’s forces launched their long-awaited counteroffensive against Russian troops almost two weeks ago after months of mixed messages and reports in the Western media of depleted stockpiles and general unreadiness.

So far, Kyiv’s troops have failed to penetrate Russia’s multi-layered defensive trenches, minefields, and anti-tank obstacles at multiple sections of the frontline in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia Regions.
