GOP Claims Covid Origins May Have Been Tied to China Bioweapons Program

Republicans in the House Intelligence Committee are claiming that there are indications that Covid could be tied to China’s bioweapons research program.

In a newly released report, the Republicans claim Covid could have “spilled over” to the general human population during an incident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

It comes a new Democrat from the House Intelligence Committee says U.S. intelligence agencies should have spied on Chinese health officials who were hiding what they knew about Covid.

Furthermore, Democrats claim intelligence agencies have failed to fix shortcomings and are not prepared for the next pandemic.

The report also adds to the growing body of evidence that then-president Donald Trump misled the public about what he was hearing from advisers about the seriousness of the virus.

The intelligence warnings summarized in the report debunk Trump’s claims that the virus was described by intelligence officials in a “very non-threatening” manner.

U.S. intelligence agencies began warning that Covid-19 could become a pandemic just weeks after the coronavirus was first reported in China, but they missed an opportunity to better understand its spread because they did not quickly begin spying on Chinese health officials who were hiding what they knew, says the newly declassified report by the House Intelligence Committee Democrats.

Meanwhile, the Republicans in the committee say they conclude there are indications that Covid was tied to China’s bioweapons research program and spilled over to the human population during a lab-related incident.

This directly contradicts previous reports and assessments.

In a declassified assessment on the origins of Covid by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in October 2021, a report states that Covid was “probably not a biological weapon,” and that these claims of biological weapons were supported by scientifically invalid claims.

The Democrat report partly vindicates the CIA and other spy agencies, noting they raised the specter of a pandemic well before it was declared by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020.
