According to information made public on Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, over 5.5 million Americans have already signed up for health insurance for 2019 through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace, a surge of 18% over the same timeframe in 2021, Reuters reports.
The Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, allows individuals to enroll between November 1 and January 15 in a healthcare plan for 2023. But typically speaking, customers must select a plan by December 15 if they want to be covered as of January 1.
New customers make up around 1.2 million of the plans’ enrollments, according to HHS.
For the 33 states that use the HealthCare.gov website for enrollment, the data is up to Dec. 3, while it is only up to Nov. 26 for the remaining states and the District of Columbia that use state-based markets.
Nearly 3.4 million Americans registered for health insurance, according to information released by HHS in late November. The biggest number of insurance enrollments ever since the Affordable Care Act was implemented in 2010 came from the roughly 14.5 million people who signed up during the open enrollment period last year.
These plans are offered by UnitedHealth Group Inc, CVS Health, Centene Corp, and Elevance, among other companies.
