Georgia’s Crucial Runoff Is Finally Here

The closely watched runoff election in Georgia will kick off on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

Herschel Walker and Senator Raphael Warnock will face off in the crucial race.

Even though Democrats have won control of the Senate, the end of the campaign has been intense.

Republican influence in the Senate is on the line, and the Senate candidates are making their last pitch effort in the election.

A lot is at stake in the battleground state race, the most expensive in the 2022 cycle, with total spending of nearly $400 million, campaign finance data shows.

Candidates have crisscrossed the state to offer their closing arguments, which echo those they made in November. Warnock is highlighting his bipartisanship and Democrats’ policy victories. Walker is arguing that his rival would be another vote for President Biden’s agenda.

But with the race in a statistical dead heat, Walker and Warnock appear more willing to deal personal blows.

Walker, who has faced close scrutiny over his past, has called Warnock a “hypocrite” and a negligent father. Warnock has criticized Walker as unqualified and questioned his mental stability.

A Warnock victory would give his party an outright majority of 51 seats in the upper chamber and a measure of sway over committees and judicial appointments. A Walker win would boost Republicans’ chances of blocking Biden’s agenda.

The right to vote remains a top issue in Georgia. And some evidence of the difficulties of exercising that right has been on display. During early voting, lines stretched for hours at polling places in metro Atlanta, with turnout strong across the state.

More than 1.85 million Georgians have already cast a ballot during an early voting period, which closed on Friday, and the state set multiple single-day records for early voting last week.

Recent polling shows Warnock slightly ahead of Walker, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, but the difference has been close to or within the margin of error.
