US to Sanction Military Procurement Network Aiding Russia

The United States will impose new sanctions on a transnational network of individuals and companies that have been procuring military technologies for Russia’s war in Ukraine, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali.

Announcing more details later on Monday, Yellen said the sanctions that would target 14 individuals and 28 entities – including financial facilitators – are part of the US larger effort to disrupt Moscow’s war effort and deny equipment Russia needs through sanctions and export controls.

However, she declined to provide details on where these sanctions individuals and entities were located or which technologies the sanctions would target.

In an effort to cut off Russian purchases, the US Commerce Department has cut off exports of American-made components and technologies that have been used in some of Russia’s military hardware while the US Treasury has sanctioned major military industrial firms in Russia, measures which Yellen said were already having an impact on Ukraine battlefield.

It is unclear whether any of the sanctions were related to the drone munitions purchases from Iran Russia managed to make to procure drones it used to attack Ukrainian cities and power infrastructure.

Iranian military entities and industries that sold Russia the drones are already under heavy US sanctions over Tehran’s nuclear development program.

At the same time, Yellen added that the Biden administration has requested an additional $4.5 billion in non-military assistance to continue to support Ukraine with financial and economic aid.

The Treasury would immediately begin disbursing it to Ukraine once congressional approval is secured.

Yellen is attending the annual Group of 20 summit in Indonesia that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not set to attend in person, though he may address the meeting virtually.

Earlier this year, she said she wouldn’t attend the G20 summit with Putin in attendance while President Biden stressed last month he had no intention of talking with Putin at the meeting.
