While claiming in an interview that he might “drop dead tomorrow,” President Joe Biden made an effort to reassure Democratic supporters who are unsure if the 79-year-old should seek reelection, Reuters reported.
If Biden were to win another term in office, he would be the oldest president in American history at the age of 86. He has stated repeatedly that he would compete for reelection in 2024, despite the fact that many Democrats have questioned whether the party should back a younger candidate instead.
Only 26% of Democratic voters in a New York Times/Sienna College survey conducted in July supported Biden’s reelection as president in 2024, with the most common objection being the candidate’s older age.
Although he recognized that voters’ concerns about his age are “valid,” Biden said they should be focused on his current performance on the job.
“If they think I do and I can do it, then that’s fine. If they don’t, then they should vote against me – not against me, they should encourage me not to go. But that’s not how I feel,” Biden concluded.
